I think she may just be in denial ("a refusal to accept or believe" that two decades have passed since her glory days. I find myself in denial about more and more things these days--as does my husband, who continues to chow down on racks of ribs and jumbo sirloins even as the size 38 chinos that he recently ordered online refuse to zip, even half way. In a world where almost all news is bad, I've pretty much stopped buying my morning paper. Am I in denial about the recession that officially began one year ago today? Well, it's not like I'm spending up a storm. It's more that I now subscribe to the "no news is good news" philosophy. Personally, I'm beginning to wonder if it's possible to live a happy, fulfilling life without exhibiting at least a FEW signs of denial. Don't you think?

It’s interesting that you refer to your former classmate as “delusional,” which implies (at least according to the first online dictionary that Google pulled up) a “false belief or opinion.” I think she may just be in denial (”a refusal to accept or believe” that two decades have passed since her glory days.
