I think we're living in a post-ironic age in which the younger generation instinctively feels that "old school" stuff is funny and entertaining, but they don't have a clear sense of why. It's not that they feel superior or feel that 80s is dumb. It's just different. It's like visiting a foreign country for them: not familiar, not where they would want to live or commit in any way to, not what they'd choose if they had to choose, but fun for a little while. I don’t think it was mocking.
