What a powerful and moving post.

(One question. though: are you sure your friend's husband will know whether to get the choker or the bead-y necklace? )

Bravo! I am overjoyed! I understand very well the apprehension that can preceed these situations and am delighted that you shared this experience. I am also given new hope that people can change ever so slightly, which can be just enough to make things not only less dysfunctional, but more selfless and caring. It is beautiful to see how each adult here contributed to make Thanksgiving one which was kind, considerate and loving of another in spite of the past! That truly gives me hope, Steph and I am overjoyed that such growth spurts at this point in time which will soften the blow of the loss you and your family feels. XXOO

A great post -- depressing and enlightening at the same time; they look at us as if we were never young. In fact, they can't even IMAGINE that we were once in their shoes engaged in the same notorious brand of hi-jinks/tom-foolery/and arrogance toward our "elders." Any admonishments toward the new generation falls on deaf ears -- just like we did likewise at their age. I don't think the idea of generational succession becomes something real in a young person's mind until that day when they're in the supermarket and the cashier calls them "sir" or "ma'am."

Wow!!! That is the best story I've heard in along time. Very touching. I think having kids unites families, no matter how dysfunctional they are. Maybe just the knowledge of everyone knowing how much everyone has been through had a softening effect. Anyway, your post made my Thanksgiving! Thanks.
