I crashed the New Year's Eve party at the White House and Joe Biden invited me to sleep on the floor in the Oval Office. Does that count?

Stephanie, don't believe him. He was the life of the party, especially those moments he slept leaning against a wall. Seriously, though, we both had a fantastic time, especially this year (or was that just me?) Though the chocolate fountain was out of order, a small but important detail of our yearly bash gone missing.

So, when will you change the title of your blog? At some point, you will happily settle into middle age and find new traumas. Has it happened yet? It happened to me years ago, driven way home by cancer. Wrinkles and a few 'mam's' at the supermarket don't look so bad when you consider the alternative.

Happy new year - to good health and all things sparkly!

Denise and I talk about that song every day.

I made it to midnight, as I generally do, but it was nothing to be jealous of. We go to the same party every year, with a crowd of people in their 50s, and it's very festive. Glow sticks, noisemakers, silly hats and crowns, the works. We love the party. Denise loves staying up until midnight, doing the kiss, watching the fireworks from the balcony. Me, I'm a morning person, and by about 10 pm I'm just ready to crash (here, there, or anywhere). If it were just up to me, I would stay at the party for a few hours and then go home when I got tired. But I stay up for her (and, secondarily, because it's just how things are at that party), a sort of annual festive death march, in which I use every trick in the book (standing up, pinching myself, drinking tea) to stay awake until midnight, then blow my horn in a huge toot of relief, not that 2009 is over, but that I finally get to go home and fall down into my bed and close my eyes.

I actually made it to midnight, just to show myself I still could (I'll be 40 next week) but I headed to bed one minute after. Sadly, I am looking back though and I think I have been doing this for the last 5 years or more regardless, and some of those years I headed to bed before midnight. At least you got out and spent time with friends! We sat home and both read a book.... my life is full of such excitement. :-/
