Although your particular actor identifcation was off, your general idea was spot on.
In 2009, Andrew McCarthy played the dad here:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1420568/

I was always glad that when John Hughes remade "pretty in pink" with the genders reversed as "some kind of wonderful", eric stoltz wisely chose the duckie character (the extremely non-duckie-like mary stuart masterson) rather than the popular girl.

Andrew McCarthy did pop up in the Brooke Shields television series, "Lipstick Jungle" a couple of years ago. I was a little surprised to see him there, not having seen him in a while. He looked, well, older, but not that different.

A little over a year ago, I walked into a yoga class and there he was in the class itself. It was extremely distracting. During far too much of the class, this voice in my head just kept shrieking, "OMG, Andrew McCarthy! I remember him from that Rob Lowe / Jacqueline Bisset movie, "Class"! OMG, we were all so young at the time!" Eventually, the yoga took over and that voice went away, thank goodness.

Hey there! My 7-year-old son loves "Unnatural History" too, but I have to tell you it's not Andrew McCarthy. Some other actor who once starred in Hal Hartley early-90s indie movies. So he's formerly too, just from a slightly later time....

OMG, my kids and I watch this every week. I so didn't recognize him. Now I feel bad for him, but I guess that he wasn't someone I expected to see on the kids TV show. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Ok, this wasn't the point, but I hate how men are portrayed on TV. They are always bumbling and clueless. If women were portrayed as dumb blonds, we'd be up in arms, but it's fine to show men as idiots. As to your point, my big thing is when all the heartthrobs from my youth are DYEING! Ouch. Yes, most were way too old for me, but talk about a mortality slap in the face.

Lol - very funny, and kind of sad, but I'm glad he has a job! Have you watched "Secret Life of the American Teenager"? Molly Ringwald is in it and, like Andrew McCarthy in the show you described, she plays a mom. I was hooked from the first episode!

My teenager and I were watching the episode of 30 Rock in which Alec Baldwin shares with Tina Fey that he used to be so stunningly hot that he could get anything he wanted. Teenage daughter thought this was meant to be a joke, but then I googled hot pictures of Alec Baldwin in the 80's. Her response was disturbingly like her response to seeing hot pictures of me in the 80's. "No freakin' way that's the same person!" Sigh.
