"And most to the point, is not cursing a sign that you are flat-lining emotionally with age or oversocialization, have simply gotten more polite and respectful, which is good, neither or both?"

I am your age. I didn't curse when I was young, nor do I now. Before today, I'd never considered that people might consider me emotionally flat because of it. I have been called overly emotional - fewer times than it's been justified, in truth. So I don't think cursing is at all related to the intensity of emotion.

Polite and respectful, in my mind, are good. Nobody likes being treated rudely. We don't like being cut off in traffic, being blamed for things beyond our control, being cursed at, being made to wait by a clerk who is gossiping with her friends, or a myriad of other small annoyances. Why not be polite whenever you can? I appreciate it when a door is held, a car slows to let me merge, someone lets me ahead of her in line because I'm only buying milk when she has a cart full, and a number of other pleasantries. I enjoy extending them to others as well. Pleasant isn't a bad word, either.

well, I am more formerly than you are and I still will let one fly when needed. But as with other things in my life having a kid and being a professional I do censor myself. But pity the fool who cuts me off in traffic or hurts someone I love.

Loved this post, Stephanie! Having grown up in the Bronx, I am always one traffic jam away from spewing bad words all over the freakin' place, but becoming a mother and a yoga teacher has made me much more tempered in most situations. My 10 year old reads what I write and we're trying to teach her self control and to be able to express herself in polite company, so I have to do the same. I think it is a sign of being Formerly something - free? Rebellious? But I'll probably end up being a terribly gauche old lady, cursing up a storm!
